In English is very common to end the sentences with question tags. These questions are those short phrases that ask, look for the speaker’s approval. They are translated into Spanish ¿verdad?, ¿no es cierto?, ¿no? The statement and the tag are always separated by a comma. (En inglés es muy frecuente terminar las frases con “question tags”. Estas preguntas preguntan, buscan la aprobación del interlocutor, y equivalen a ¿verdad?, ¿no es cierto?, ¿no? La oración y la question tag siempre van separadas por una coma).

The woman in red is your mother, isn’t she? / La mujer de rojo es tu madre, ¿no?
You cannot help me, can you? / No me puedes ayudar, ¿verdad?

To form a question tag we use the auxiliary or modal verb of the main sentence and its subject but with the opposite sign. This means that if the statement is positive is followed by a negative tag; and a negative statement is followed by a positive tag. If the sentence has neither modal nor auxiliary verb, we will use the auxiliary “to do”. (Para formar una question tag usamos el verbo auxiliar de la oración principal y su sujeto pero con signo contrario. Esto es que si la oración es positiva irá seguida de una question tag en negativo; y si la oración es negativa, la question tag será positiva. Si la oración principal no consta de verbo auxiliar, utilizaremos el verbo auxiliar “to do” para construir la question tag.)
He doesn’t like green beans, does he? / A él no le gustan las judías, ¿verdad?
He likes green beans, doesn’t he? / A ´le le gustan las judías, ¿no?
She is coming tomorrow, isn’t she? / Ella viene mañana, ¿no es cierto?
She is not coming tomorrow, is she? / Ella no viene mañana, ¿verdad?
You went out yesterday, didn’t you? / Saliste ayer, ¿no?

Question tags are used to check and verify information. Sometimes they are used by default. (Las question tags se usan para comprobar y verificar la información, pero muchas veces se usan por defecto).
